Bailey Goes to Bootcamp!

I’m officially back on the wagon! Yep that’s right I joined a 30 Day boot camp in Uptown and let’s just say it was clearly on! I haven’t worked out consistently since I moved to Oakland last August so this morning was a struggle especially because class started at 6:30 a.m. I am not a morning person so I was dreading the call time even more than the work out. But once I got there I was ready to get my butt kicked.

I found the boot camp on living social for $25.00 and asked my friends to do it with me so my girl Alicia Jay signed up and it was simply out of control. I rolled out of bed at 5:45…picked her up and headed to camp to meet with our instructor Martin; who had jokes early in the morning.

At 5’1 I knew it was just a matter of time before he started referencing Alicia’s height but he started with stretching and jumping jacks instead. From there he ordered us to run to the corner to which I replied, “Oh Gawd! Let the games begin…I’m going to die!”  We take off towards the stop sign when Martin can’t hold his ridiculous tall comments anymore and says, “You must be seven feet tall.”  I (gasping for air and laughing) say, “No Sir!” and Alicia trotting besides me shouts, “ NOPE! 6’6!”

Out of breath and ready to cuss we move on to the next exercise…PUSH UPS!!!!! The cool thing about Martin is that he isn’t a drill master. He’s pretty calm and supportive. Most people in the class were there for the first time so he focused on learning our names and perfecting our form. He assured us that in a few weeks the workout would be in the bag and we’d be happy with the results.

Squats, push-ups, core/ab workouts, and tricep dips mixed with resistance training and several set of laps to the stop sign mean that we will be healthy in no time. It wasn’t easy but it was worth it and I’m glad we joined the boot camp. Even more than that I’m happy that Alicia joined me and is there for support; she’s in shape but every time I got winded she stayed behind and jogged beside me. Hearing her yell, “You got it! Don’t quit!” Gave me the strength I needed to survive. I keep reminding myself of how weak I was when I joined Crossfit at In Motion Fitness in Chico, CA and how strong I was after a year of training with Mark. I was a bad mamma jamma but it took hard work and consistency and I can do it again if I stick to it.

Those of you who know me personally know that controlling my weight has been an uphill battle for years. Sometimes I’m winning and sometimes I’m losing but I’ve decided to never give up. This isn’t about vanity or self-esteem for me lol I’ve learned to be fly at a size 12 and at a size 16. For me, it’s about being healthy and taking care of my body. When I’m in shape I feel better mentally, physically and emotionally. I recently started a diet with my doctor and I’ve lost 20 pounds but I have a lot more to go. I’d like to lose a total of 50 pounds but what I’ve learned in the past is that I lose inches when I’m working out hard core; so my ultimate goal is to get back to a healthy size 12. After all at a size 12 I weighed 212 pounds but didn’t look a pound over 175. Yes…my body is awesome like that when I’m taking care of it.

I’m doing this for me…not for a job, a man or public opinion. It’s taken a while for me to get here but at 31 years old…I’ve realized that if I don’t take care of me for me NOBODY else will.

That said…day one is in the bag and I survived. I had my friend Asha take my measurements and I will update this blog at least once a week. Some days will be harder than others but I’m determined so I won’t quit after all I have an awesome support group and since pain is just weakness leaving the body…it’s time to get STRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have any tips or success stories of your own feel free t0 share after all we are all on this journey together.

  1. Getting in shape is never easy, but anything worth having is worth fighting for; and your health is definitely worth the fight. Remember, even if you get out there and you’re super tired, you’ve already won by taking the first step to get up and go. Success is not just in the end result, but also in the journey.

🙂 I read your second one first, but I liked this one a lot. You’re a STRONG LADY!!! Mentally AND physically (and I should know… pressure points! lol) If only anybody could get me up at 5:45 every day, I might just be able to hang- kinda.

I leave you with the only quote that’s appropriate:

    “What is pain?!”
    “French bread!”

    “What is fatigue?!”
    “Army clothes!”
